''And we are back to work!
This time I had the pleasure to have back the incredible #Gina_Rios. She was my first guest on the Podcast, 7 years ago!
Gina is most known for having been the lead singer from the Stoner Rock band Spacegoat.
Now, in front of Black Glow, she embarks on a new adventure through the cosmic world.
In this interview we talked about the hiatus, the comeback and the first self titled EP for her new project.

The late-2023 self-titled debut from Black Glow marks a new beginning for Monterrey, Mexico, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Gina Rios, formerly of Spacegoat, and something of a creative redirect, taking on a sound that is less indebted to boogie and classic doom but that has clearly learned the lessons of its influences. Also credited with producing (Victor “KB” Velazquez recorded, mixed and mastered, which doesn’t invalidate the credit), Rios is a strong enough performer to carry the five-song EP/short-LP on her own, but thankfully bassist Oscar Saucedo and drummer Octavio Diliegros bring tonal fullness to the breadth of atmosphere in the rolling closer “Obscured Jail,” reaching past seven minutes with fluidity that adds to Black Glow‘s aspects of purpose and craft, which are significant despite being the band’s first outing. As a vehicle for Rios‘ songwriting, Black Glow sound immediately like they can evolve in ways Spacegoat likely couldn’t or wouldn’t have, and that prospect is all the more enticing with the accomplishments displayed here.

When someone talks about Mexico, I don't think of doom music, but that will change from now on. Okay, the sombrero will still be the first thing to light up, but I can also say that's where the Black Glow comes from!
The trio who work with huge melodies. Imagine a Southern version of Frayle just without the witch part. Not so long ago we wrote about the band Lodestar, who make similar music, but Black Glow's debut material has a touch more melancholy. This makes me say that the band of the Canadian brother is a little closer to me, but this record cannot be neglected either, especially on cloudy, gray days, when we are tired of the cold and the embrace of the fog. If you like slow doom music accompanied by female vocals, then this material will definitely appeal to you. It's interesting that these days there are more and more debut albums that sound like twenty years behind the band. That's a really cool thing!

Interview with Gina Ríos, frontwoman of Black Glow
"At the time, I really liked Mexican stoner/psychedelic rock band Spacegoat’s only LP so far, Superstition (2016, I wrote about it here), so a few years later I took a deep breath and wrote to the band’s frontwoman, singer-guitarist Gina Ríos, to see if she would answer to some of my (interview) questions. She didn’t respond to my inquiry until now, so it came as a surprise when she wrote a few days ago that she was open to a virtual conversation. In the meantime, it also turns out that Spacegoat is – unfortunately – already a thing of the past, so the interview is updated by the debut material, a five-track EP of the singer’s new band, Black Glow, which was released in October."

Desert Psychlist loves the timbre and tone of a strong female voice powerfully soaring over music of a dank dark and heavy nature, there is something about that contrast that sends shivers of delight hurtling down our spines. Given that statement it will come as no surprise to find us waxing lyrical on the virtues of an album containing such dynamics that we discovered literally an hour before writing this review. The album in question is "Black Glow", the debut release from a Mexican trio going by the very same name. Black Glow hail from Monterray and consist of Gina Ríos (guitar/vocals); Oscar Saucedo (bass) and Octavio Diliegros (drums), the band jam a groove that should appeal to fans of Witch Mountain, Windhand and bands of that ilk, a dark seductive doomic groove enhanced by powerful velvety smooth vocal tones.
